Al Gianniny Papers [manuscript], 1949-1996.

The papers consist Gianniny's files as professor of humanities in the School of Engineering at the University of Virginia and reflect his interest in the the history of the school. They contain research for the symposium and exhibit "150 years of engineering education at the University of Virginia," including articles, student papers, issues particularly the teaching of humanities and the transition from natural philosophy to applied science (engineering). Other topics include the American Society for Engineering Education, Thomas Jefferson's interest in transportation and science, canals of Virginia, English language and humanities courses for engineering students.and The collection also contains photographs of the Engineering School by Joseph Vaughan, 1935-1938, undated, including professors, Deans Gibson, Henderson, Rodman and Quarles, students, buildings, and social events. Of interest are photographs of Peter Carter, engineering janitor; the Red Hill air field and Fred Morses's plane; dead chestnuts on the Skyline Drive; and Johnnie Larowe coaching student boxer Joseph L. Vaughan. Of interest are a log of expenditures for the administration building at the University of Virginia Air Field, 1941; a history of the School of Engineering by Charles Nerses Papazian, 1972; long-range planning efforts for the division of humanities, 1976; various drafts and articles on Leopold Jules Boeck, Claudius Crozet, John E. Gibson, John Lloyd Newcomb, William B. Rogers, Edgar A. Stark, William M. Thornton, Charles S. Venable, and William S. Weedon; an interview with Charles Henderson; a draft of a strategic plan for the School of Engineering and Applied Science, 1996. and Gianniny's history "From natural philosophy to applied science." There is also a copy of a letter from president Alderman to Paul Barringer pertaining to a report by William M. Thornton and others. In addition there are audiocassettes of lectures by engineering professors in Gianniny's Engineering 351 class, 1973-1974: Charles H. Barron, Jr., on entropy; Dr. Thomas Hunter III on medicine and biomedical health care delivery; F. Anthony Iachetta on wastes as energy sources; Reed Johnson on energy needs; Henry Phillips on managing construction of nuclear power plants; Lawrence Quarles on nuclear plant site decision; Robert H. Williams on energy policy; Donald Wright on the computer in biomedical health care. In addition there are lectures on unidentified topics by Charles H. Barron, Jr.; [George?] Bluman and Billington; Brittain and Krick; Gibson and H. Hartman; Luther Y. Gore; Hartman and Stansbury at an H. & S.S. Workshop; and Lamar and Shriver; a discussion labelled [Krauer?]; talks or proceedings from an undated Societal/Urban Systems Conference; LSD 3650 Troy, N.Y., 1974.
